The German Transport Ministry in a attempt to finally shed some light on the recent diesel emissions scandal has ordered several automakers to report to the ministry in Berlin and explain themselves.

Yesterday was Opel’s turn to admit that they were very creatively abusing a loophole in the current legislation. Today, Fiat was supposed to answer to allegations that their cleaning systems completely shut off after 22 minutes. The usual test cycle takes 20 minutes.

A meeting for 3:00 p.m. was scheduled but Fiat’s lawyers canceled in the last minute, questioning the Germans’ jurisdiction in that matter. Which is a valid question since the company’s legal headquarters are in Turin, Italy, but why brush them off like this if you have nothing to hide? Why not do what everybody else does, show up on time and talk a lot without actually saying anything?

Wouldn’t the BMVI have jurisdiction on Fiat vehicles sold in Germany?

Apparently, the cars were approved for sale in all EU countries by Italy. So only Italy has the power to revoke that approval, force them to a recall, or whatever.

Still, why not put some monkeys in a suit, let them talk shit until ears bleed and at least fake cooperation?

The big news here is that the Germans actually thought you could schedule Italians.
